The Importance of Tire Rotation?

Mechanic with Tires

Why exactly is tire rotation important? To put it simply, regular tire rotations help to extend the life of your Latrobe faring tires, ensuring you get the most out of your tires. What exactly does tire rotation do? By default, tires do not wear evenly. Rotating the tires from one axle to another and vice versa helps prevent any single tire from reaching its end of life faster than any other tires. How Does Drivetrain Affect Tire Rotation?

Every time you brake, accelerate, or turn your vehicle’s wheels on the curves of Scottdale roads, your tires experience more wear due to an increase in friction between your tires and the road. Depending on your vehicle’s drivetrain (front, rear, or all wheel drive) your tire treads will wear out at different rates. For your reference, we’ve included more information on this below:

  • Front-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is directed to the front wheels, which are responsible for steering, starting, and most of the stopping force. Therefore, the front tires will wear out the fastest.
  • Rear-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is directed to the rear wheels, but the front wheels are still responsible for steering and much of braking. The rear tires will still wear out faster than the front tires, although at a generally slower rate.
  • All-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is more evenly distributed, but there are many experts out there that maintain that the rear tires will still wear out faster.
  • Intelligent all-wheel-drive systems: Going around curves means different levels of strain and friction on the inside tires vs. outside tires. Some advanced all-wheel-drive systems can even direct power to an individual wheel while driving around a curve for better cornering, which will further affect tire life.

How Often Should You Rotate Your AWD Tires?

If you have an all-wheel-drive vehicle, then your tire rotation pattern will differ from a front wheel or rear wheel drive vehicle. Because power from your engine is transferred to every wheel, the rotation will have to be done in a specific way, and in shorter intervals. How often should you rotate your tires? Most AWD drivetrain vehicles should have their tires rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Follow these rules when rotating your tires at home:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.
