Jeep® Cherokee Towing Capacity in Greensburg, PA
Jeep® vehicles are traditionally known for their off-roading and towing prowess. Over the years, with improved engine technology, the maximum tow capacity and payload have only increased. What is the Jeep Cherokee towing capacity for the current 2020 model year?
Max Jeep Cherokee Towing
The tow capacity varies, so we can’t give you a uniform number and just leave it at that. For starters, the standard tow capacity is 2,000 pounds. That’s if you opt for the standard 2.0-liter I4 DOHCC DI Turbo engine.
However, buyers have the option to upgrade to a 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine. With the engine upgrade, the max tow capacity remains at 2,000 pounds. When you upgrade, though, you have the additional option of adding the Trailer-Tow Group. With the accessory, the tow limit more than doubles to 4,500 pounds.
We want to stress that there is a third engine option: the 2.4-liter I4 MultiAir engine. The Trailer-Tow Group is not available with this engine, and max tow capacity remains at 2,000 pounds.
Getting the Most of the Tow Capability
There are a number of accessories to make towing safer and more efficient. Please always aim for OEM add-ons and never a third-party aftermarket part. Some tow accessories available include a ball mount adaptor, a ridge winch cable, and D-ring shackles.
Towing Tips
Whether you’re towing a trailer, a wagon, or another vehicle, you must follow safety protocol. Fishtailing is a common cause of towing accidents. If the trailer fishtails, step off the gas. Does the fishtail continue when you accelerate? If so, check the trailer to be sure weight is evenly distributed. The trailer may also be too far back on the hitch ball.
