What to Do About These Common Road Hazards

August 10th, 2019 by

Drivers are responsible for staying alert while driving. Many obstacles can threaten their safety, from ice on the road to wildlife to other cars. At Hillview Motors in Greensburg, PA, we want you to be safe and secure on the road, so we’re happy to share these common road hazards with you and offer advice on dealing with them.

Weather-related conditions

One of the most common hazards on the road is inclement weather. These can range from snow and ice to rain to fog. To deal with weather-related hazards you should:

  • Drive slowly and cautiously
  • Make sure there is a safe distance between you and the car in front of you
  • Make sure your windshield stays clean
  • Turn on your headlights

Potholes

Unfortunately, potholes can be a big problem after the long winter months in Pennsylvania. Potholes can be dangerous because they’re often easy to miss. Drive especially carefully after winter and keep a sharp eye on the road. Be sure not to over-correct if you see a pothole, and pay attention to the other cars around you.

Pedestrians and bicyclists

Especially within cities, be very aware of crosswalks and areas where people are walking and riding bikes. Always yield to pedestrians and bicyclists, and stay off of your phone at all times so you’re completely tuned in to what’s happening around you.

Construction workers

Another common hazard is driving through construction zones. Workers are usually present and their equipment may be taking up part of the road. Drive slowly and watch for their directions. You may have to change lanes. Also try to remember that traffic fines are usually higher in construction zones.
